78 ENTREVISTA The most important part of an expedition and the key to success is preparing properly, both physically and technically. I train very hard beforehand, with about 2 years’ preparation. It’s hard work to have a real chance of achieving my dream. Thanks to your expeditions you have also become a flagbearer for environmental protection, raising a great deal of awareness. Although I love satisfying my ego overcoming challenges, one of the things I am proudest of is being a staunch defender of the protection of the environment. Indeed, my boat is called Ocean Defender and I try to increase people’s awareness of avoiding single-use plastics, and that we can live with less than we do. We only have one planet! Have you seen things that have disheartened you? Rather than dishearten me, they have surprised me, in particular the amount of fishing waste there is in the Pacific. During my 76-day crossing, I found rubbish every day. The Pacific is where there is the greatest build-up of nonbiodegradable plastic and waste. As well as your challenges and awareness work, you are also an entrepreneur I run an active tourism company called Meridiano Raid where we welcome around 100 school children every day from April to June. We try to instil in these kids the habit of doing exercise in a natural setting, and they have a great time without being glued to their phones or social media. Needless to say, we teach them to recycle and try hard to raise their awareness. A friend and I are also partners in the only hotel for cyclists in Madrid, called Ciclo Lodge. It’s a project we invested heavily in so that it was as sustainable as possible. La parte más importante de una expedición y clave del éxito es prepararme muy bien, física y técnicamente. Me formo muy bien previamente, unos 2 años de preparación. Es un trabajo muy duro para ver las posibilidades reales que hay de mi sueño. Gracias a tus expediciones te has convertido también en un referente de la protección al medioambiente, llevando a cabo una labor de concienciación importante. Aunque me encanta satisfacer mi ego de superar retos, una de las cosas de las que me siento más orgulloso es de ser un acérrimo defensor de la protección al medioambiente. De hecho mi embarcación se llama Ocean Defender e intento concienciar a la gente de que tenemos que plantearnos evitar los plásticos de un solo uso y que se puede vivir con menos de lo que vivimos. ¡Qué tenemos solo un planeta! ¿Te has encontrado con imágenes que te han decepcionado? Más que decepcionarmeme ha sorprendido, en concreto en el Pacífico, la cantidad de desechos de pesca que hay en el mar. En la travesía de 76 días que hice me encontraba diariamente desperdicios… El Pacífico es donde más acumulación de plásticos y de desechos no orgánicos hay. Además de tus retos y de la labor de concienciación eres también emprendedor Tengo una empresa de turismo activo que se llama Meridiano Raid en la que recibimos de abril a junio a unos 100 escolares diarios. A esos chavales les inculcamos una actividad física en un medio natural, se lo pasan genial sin estar pendientes del móvil y de las RRSS. Lógicamente les enseñamos a reciclar y hacemos con ellos una labor de concienciación importante. También comparto con un amigo el único hotel ciclista de Madrid, que se llama Ciclo Lodge. Un proyecto en el que hicimos una fuerte inversión para que fuera lo más sostenible posible.
