We walk down a narrow street between the Latina and Lavapiés neighbourhoods to learn about the pottery work of Laura de Lorenzo, under her label CresPottery. Crossing the threshold of her studio, A Cielo Abierto, it was hard to take in what met our eyes: an industrial space with the feel of an ancient workshop, but with a contemporary, bright and open aesthetic. And we could not help but focus initially on this versatile refuge where the artist carries out her work and research. Chatting with her, everything soon becomes clear. She is an energetic, passionate and creative woman with a strong personality who turned this former bakery into premises that maintain the neighbourhood’s industrial vibe, making them her creative workshop. She was renovating the place for three years and “literally took the roof off to let the sunlight in”, she explains. That is where the name comes from. “I wanted the space to breathe, to eliminate barriers, to stimulate the senses, for people to come in and connect with their innermost self, with what is alive.” A space that undoubtedly invites people to come in, have a look around, chat and even stick their hands in the clay.
