53 ACTUALIDAD En Sotogrande desconocemos que convivimos con especies tan únicas como el Águila pescadora, el Aguilucho lagunero o el Martín pescador, hay hasta 140 especies distintas. Por eso formamos parte “Natura 2000”, la red ecológica europea de áreas de conservación de la biodiversidad, cuyo objetivo es asegurar la supervivencia de estas especies. En “nuestra” reserva trabaja habitualmente un grupo de anilladores pertenecientes al GOES (Grupo Ornitológico del Estrecho), todos voluntarios con una alta formación. El anillamiento es una herramienta fundamental para los científicos, para conocer la biografía y la dinámica poblacional de las aves. A estos anilladores se les puede ver en una caseta de madera, ubicada en el acceso a la playa. Yo los he visto trabajar y es realmente increíble la delicadeza y el cariño con el que hacen su labor. Además, organizanactividades coordinadas con colegios para difundir conocimiento. También rescatan ejemplares heridos y participa en otros proyectos ornitológicos. Many of us in Sotogrande are unaware that we share our environment with 140 different species, some as unique as the Osprey, the Western Marsh Harrier and the Kingfisher. This is why we are part of Natura 2000, the network of nature protection areas in the European Union, whose aim is to ensure that these species survive. In “our” reserve, a group of highly-trained volunteer banders belonging to the GOES (The Straits Ornithology Group) can frequently be seen at work. Banding is a fundamental tool for scientists, enabling them to know the biography and population dynamics of the birds. These banders can be found in a wooden hut located by the entrance to the beach. I have seen them in action and the delicacy and care they put into their work is truly incredible. Moreover, they organise activities with schools to spread their knowledge. They also rescue injured birds, and take an active part in other ornithological projects.
