72 PAISAJISMO Tus proyectos mezclan historia, arte y naturaleza. ¿Dónde empieza todo? Desde muy joven me fascinó la arquitectura y el arte hispanoislámico. Colecciono piezas arqueológicas y siempre he sentido esa conexión entre arte y naturaleza. Empecé estudiando biológicas, pero por casualidades de la vida, mi familia me encargó un jardín en Extremadura, salió bien, y comprendí que era el lugar donde se unían mis dos pasiones: el arte y naturaleza. Y luego además me interesa muchísimo la historia del jardín, mi trabajo es revisitar nuestra historia y reactualizar las invariantes del jardín español y traerlo a la contemporaneidad. Hablas de la coherencia entre arquitectura y jardín como algo esencial. Sí, el diálogo entre arquitectura y paisajismo es clave. El jardín no puede ser un añadido. Nace de la arquitectura y la complementa. Es el reflejo exterior de lo que ocurre dentro. En mis proyectos siempre busco esa coherencia: que la casa y el jardín respiren el mismo tiempo, la misma historia. En Sotogrande, el jardín tiene un protagonismo clave De hecho, el caso de Sotogrande en este sentido es muy singular. Aquí el jardín está completamente integrado en el lugar, además tiene una vegetación espontánea excepcional, con una riqueza paisajística y botánica increíble. En Estados Unidos tienen tan en cuenta al paisajista como al arquitecto al abordar los proyectos, y eso se nota en Sotogrande. I’ve been fascinated by architecture and Hispano-Islamic art since I was little. I collect archaeological pieces and I have always felt that connection between art and nature. I began studying Biology but, by a twist of fate, my family put me in charge of a garden in Extremadura; it all turned out well and I realised that it was the place I could bring together my two passions: art and nature. What's more, I’m interested in the history of gardens. My work involves revisiting our history and reinterpreting the enduring elements of the Spanish garden, bringing them into the present. You highlight the importance of coherence between architecture and gardens. Yes, the dialogue between architecture and the landscape is the key. The garden cannot be a mere add-on. It stems from the architecture and completes it. The outside is a reflection of what happens inside. My projects always aim for that coherence: that the house and the garden breathe in harmony, singing from the same hymn sheet. In Sotogrande, gardens play a key role Indeed, in that sense Sotogrande is a very special case. Gardens here are completely integrated into the setting and there is also some amazing spontaneous vegetation, with incredible landscapes and botanical diversity. In the USA, the landscape designer and architect are equally important when approaching a project, and there is evidence of that in Sotogrande.
