78 El RCG Sotogrande hizo una apuesta fuerte por el golf amateur de calidad ¿cree que fue un acierto? Sin duda, fue un gran acierto apostar por una prueba amateur demáxima calidad. Cada año la Copa de Sotogrande reúne a los mejores jugadores de Europa y Reino Unido, consolidándose como una cita fija en el calendario europeo. Esta prueba es la única del calendario amateur europeo que se celebra siempre en el mismo Club. Y supone todo un acontecimiento para federaciones, jugadores y nuestros socios. Entre los ganadores de su prueba individual figuran nombres de tallamundial como: RoryMcilroy, Shaun Lawry, Sergio García, Paldraig Harrington, Francesco Molinari, todos ellos ganadores de majors. Y sin embargo en 2023, el Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters cambió su ubicación del club Valderrama al RCG Sotogrande, lo que ha supuesto la vuelta al circuito del golf profesional, ¿cuál es su balance de estas dos ediciones? Aunque el ADN de nuestro club es el golf amateur, esta Junta Directiva cree firmemente que, cada cierto tiempo, hay que aprovechar la visibilidad que le brinda la retransmisión de una prueba profesional de primer nivel para mostrar al mundo nuestras instalaciones y las posibilidades que ofrece Sotogrande como destino de golf. Al acoger por primera vez una prueba del DPWT, queríamos demostrar que contábamos con las instalaciones y las capacidades logísticas y de gestión necesarias para albergar con éxito una prueba profesional de primer nivel. Siendo conscientes de las molestias que, para nuestros socios, podía suponer la celebración de una prueba profesional, limitamos nuestro acuerdo con el DPWT a dos años. El balance ha sido muy positivo: hemos reforzado muestra imagen de marca, demostrado nuestra capacidad organizativa y establecido una magnif ica relación con el DPWT y sus patrocinadores. ¿El golf es trabajo, afición o pasión? Es, sin duda, afición y pasión. El golf, como deporte, es una escuela de vida: exige constancia, paciencia y grandes dosis de humildad. Tiene un grado de dificultad elevado y requiere un respeto absoluto por las reglas, ya que el jugador es su propio árbitro. The RCG Sotogrande has invested heavily in high-quality amateur golf. Has that been a success? There’s no doubt it was a good decision to commit to a topquality amateur tournament. Every year, the Sotogrande Cup attracts the best players from Europe and the UK, becoming a leading f ixture in the European calendar. It is the only competition on the European amateur circuit that is always held at the same club. And it ’s a big event for the federations, players and our members. The winners of the singles tournament include worldfamous players such as: Rory Mcilroy, Shaun Lawry, Sergio García, Padraig Harrington, Francesco Molinari, all major winners. However, in 2023, the Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters switched venues from the Valderrama club to the RCG Sotogrande, which has meant a return to the professional golf circuit. How would you evaluate these two editions? Although amateur golf is part of our club’s DNA, the current Board of Directors strongly believes that from time to time it is necessary to make the most of the publicity provided by the broadcasting of a top-level professional competition to show the world our facilities and what Sotogrande offers as a golfing destination. By hosting a DP World Tour event for the first time, we wanted to show that we have all the facilities and logistical skills required to hold a top-quality professional tournament. Aware of the inconvenience caused to our members by holding a professional event, our agreement with the DPWT was limited to two years. Overall, it has been very positive: we have strengthened our brand image, shown off our organisational skills and established a magnificent relationship with the DPWT and its sponsors. Is golf a job, hobby or passion? It is, without a doubt, a hobby and passion. Golf, as a sport, is a school of life, requiring perseverance, patience and a great deal of humi l i ty.
