87 CAFÉ A Jesús Gil Marín no le hace falta presentación. Fundador de la reconocida comercializadora inmobiliaria Gilmar y exalcalde de Estepona, ha sabido construir una sólida trayectoria empresarial sin renunciar a su esencia: el amor por su familia, los animales, el trabajo bien hecho y su tierra de adopción, la Costa del Sol. Nacido en Madrid en 1961, es hijo de Jesús Gil y María Ángeles Marín. A sus 63 años, Jesús es un hombre criado en el mundo empresarial pero forjado bajo una exigencia poco habitual hoy en día. “Mi padre no era de títulos ni de palabras vacías. Había que demostrar las cosas. Por eso empecé en Los Ángeles de San Rafael llevando cemento y combustible, con un sueldo modesto y currando desde el alba hasta el cierre”. Aquel método duro, pero eficaz, marcó para siempre su carácter. En 1983 fundó Gilmar, una empresa que hoy componen más de 500 personas y vende una media de 15 inmuebles al día. “Hacemos de todo: fincas, obra nueva, segunda mano, locales… Hemos sabido crecer en tiempos complicados”, explica con orgullo, afirmando que incluso los momentos de crisis les han servido como impulso. En esa expansión, la Costa del Sol ha sido un territorio natural. Gilmar tiene presencia consolidada desde Estepona hasta Benalmádena, donde acaban de inaugurar su nueva oficina. Pero su conexión con esta zona también es muy especial a nivel familiar. “Ya en los años 60 mis padres nos traían todos los años a Torremolinos, y actualmente mi madre aún vive en Marbella. La Costa sigue teniendo un potencial magnífico y Málaga en concreto tiene todos los ingredientes para convertirse en una de las tres grandes ciudades de España: cultura, gastronomía, aeropuerto internacional, clima...”. También Sotogrande, que conoce perfectamente, y donde mantiene grandes amigos, ocupa un lugar destacado para Jesús. “Antes era muy exclusivo, pero ha evolucionado con inteligencia y ya hay vida todo el año. Ya no es solo golf y polo, se ha diversificado más la oferta manteniendo un nivel altísimo en gastronomía, deporte y estilo de vida. Sotogrande se ha convertido en un sitio para vivir, no sólo para visitar”. En su recorrido vital también figura su paso por la política como alcalde de su querida Estepona. De hecho, sólo la insólita unión del resto de fuerzas políticas de la Corporación le impidió repetir en la alcaldía tras su segundo triunfo electoral. “Pero esome permitió retomar mi carrera empresarial. Nome arrepiento de esa etapa pero no volvería. La política es muy dura y poco agradecida. Prefiero seguir aportando desde el mundo de la empresa”. Jesús Gil Marín requires no introduction. Founder of the renowned real estate company Gilmar and the former mayor of Estepona, he has managed to forge a solid business career without foregoing his lifeblood: the love for his family, animals, a job well done and his adopted home, the Costa del Sol. Born in Madrid in 1961, he is the son of Jesús Gil and María Ángeles Marín. Now 63 years old, Jesús is a man who was brought up in the business world, and moulded by an exigency that is rarely seen today. “My father wasn’t a man for qualifications or lip service. You had to prove your worth. That’s why I started out in Los Ángeles de San Rafael transporting cement and fuel, on modest wages and working from dawn to dusk”. That tough but effective method marked his character for ever. In 1983, he founded Gilmar, a company composed of 500 people these days and selling an average of 15 properties per day. “We do everything: rural estates, new builds, second hand, business premises...we have managed to grow through difficult times”, he proudly explains, stating that even the times of crisis have served as an impulse. The Costa del Sol has been his home territory during this expansion. Gilmar has established its position from Estepona to Benalmádena, where they have recently opened their new offices. His connection with this area, however, also runs deep on a family level. “Back in the 60s, my parents brought us to Torremolinos every year and my mother lives in Marbella even now. The Costa del Sol still has tremendous potential and Malaga in particular has all the ingredients to become one of Spain’s three big cities: culture, cuisine, an international airport, great weather, etc.” And Sotogrande, which Jesús knows like the back of his hand, and where he has good friends, holds a special place in his heart. “It was very very exclusive before, but it has evolved cleverly and there are now things going on all year round. It’s no longer just golf and polo; there is a wider range of options, offering cuisine, sport and a lifestyle second to none. Sotogrande has become a place to set up home, not just to visit”. A highlight of his life story is his time in politics, as mayor of his beloved Estepona. Indeed, only the unlikely alliance of the remaining political parties in the Town Hall stopped him from becoming mayor again after his second election victory. “But that allowed me to get back to my business career. I don’t regret those times, but I wouldn’t do it again. Politics is hard and thankless work. I prefer to carry on doing my bit as part of the business sector”. A J
