Belén habla siempre en plural, no personaliza, huye de los focos y selecciona cuidadosamente sus apariciones mediáticas “solo hablo con los medios del sector interiorismo”, nos dice. Con Ke Sotogrande Magazine hace una excepción. Inmersa en diferentes proyectos en Madrid, Londres o Nueva York, sorprende la serenidad, templanza y perspicacia que transmite. Together with her partner, Marcos Arias, she welcomes us into her studio in Lope de Vega street, in the Las Letras neighbourhood of Madrid, and we enjoy a conversation in which they convey their professional complicity, share their aesthetic vision, the passion for every project and their sense of humour in the face of the maelstrom of work. Belén always speaks in the plural, never referring only to herself. She flees from the spotlight and is careful to select her appearances in the media. “I only speak to the interior design media”, she tells us. Thankfully, she makes an exception for KE Sotogrande Magazine. Immersed in different projects in Madrid, London and New York, the serenity, restraint and insight she conveys take us by surprise. SOSTENIBILIDAD ES VENCER EL PASO DEL TIEMPO El estudio proyecta espacios discretos, armoniosos y neutros que no pasan de moda y como Belén defiende, “somos sostenibles porque nuestras obras son perdurables”. Y “a diferencia de otros interioristas, no nos basamos en ningún estilo. Ajustamos las necesidades del cliente con respecto al edificio que hay que diseñar. A nosotros nos manda, conceptualmente, el edificio en primer lugar y su ubicación”. Ambos coinciden en definirse como un “estudio sensible a la época del edificio, al lugar donde se hace y a las necesidades del cliente”. Y serán esas tres variables las que marcarán el camino del diseño creativo, siguiendo siempre las referencias de perdurabilidad, calidez y materiales nobles. La interiorista nos aclara la diferencia: El continente es el edificio, los materiales y todo lo que forma lo básico del proyecto. El contenido es el equipamiento de esa caja “la guinda del pastel”, en sus propias palabras, lo que le da alma. Un estudio propositivo, no impositivo. Trabajan con grandes arquitectos para completar el proyecto, pero “nunca" para intervenir de manera protagonista porque “somos arquitectos de interiores” afirma Belén. Tienen la capacidad de elegir con qué clientes trabajar y esto les permite “disfrutar mucho del proceso e involucrarnos de manera muy personal en cada proyecto”, nos cuenta. SUSTAINABILITY IS BEATING THE PASSING OF TIME The studio designs discrete, harmonious and neutral spaces that do not go out of fashion, and as Belén maintains, “we are sustainable because our work is ageless”. And “unlike other interior designers, we are not set on any particular style. We adjust the client’s needs with respect to the building to be designed. The conceptualization stage is ruled by the building in first place, and then the setting”. Both are in agreement when defining themselves as a “studio that is sensitive to the age of the building, where it is located, and the needs of the client”. These are the three variables that guide the creative design process, always taking into consideration longevity, warmth and noble materials. The interior designer clarifies the distinction: the structure is the building, the materials and all the basic parts of the project. The content is the features of that structure. As she says, it is the “icing on the cake”, its life force. This is a studio that proposes rather than imposes. They collaborate with important architects to complete projects, but always taking a secondary role because “we are interior architects”, says Belén. They are able to choose which clients to work with and this allows them to “really enjoy the process and to get personally involved in each project”, she says.
