En el este de Londres teníamos un almacén donde guardábamos barcos y, aunque hoy parezca increíble, entonces un barco de 40 pies era considerado grande. Recuerdo sentarme a bordo y pensar: “¿Cómo demonios maneja alguien algo así?”. Hoy, un barco de 40 pies ya no se considera especialmente grande. I started at 16 as a marine engineering apprentice, not on the commercial side. In East London, we had a warehouse where we kept boats and, although it may seem hard to believe today, back then a 40-foot boat was considered large. I remember sitting on board and thinking: “How on earth does anyone handle something like this?” Today, a 40-foot boat is no longer considered particularly large. In fact, the current Sunseeker range starts at 55 feet. What else has changed since then? Size, of course. But reliability as well. Today’s boats allow people to cruise further and with much greater confidence. In this area, the usual trip would have been to Puerto Banús and back. In the South of France, many boats would barely leave the Bay of Cannes. Now owners spend far more hours at sea and make much more ambitious passages.
