73 AVENTURA CALCUTA La ciudad de la alegría The city of joy The image of a man sitting by the wall of Howrah railway station in Calcutta is one that will stay in my mind forever. On a floor covered in dry urine, he had found a space to place his wooden leg and beg for money. His eyes conveyed a dignity that made a deep impression on me. What made his dignity really stand out was the setting in which human values seem to have reached rock bottom. Recalling something Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, the first thing that arose from deep within me was to give this stranger a smile to thank him for awakening feelings and values within me that have faded into oblivion in our “civilised” world.
